The Dam was built between 1954 and 1959 and its power station became fully operational in 1979.

Al-Mustansiriya University is one of the oldest Islamic universities in the world. Established in 1227 as a Madrasah by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir.

Ukhaidir castle is a large, rectangular fortress erected in 775 AD with a unique defensive style. The complex comprises a primary hall, a big Iwan, a reception hall and servants quarters.

Front: Abu Ali al Hassan ibn al Haitham (965-1040), Arab mathematician and physicist

He wrote the first important book on optics since the time of Ptolemy. His Treasury of Optics, first published in Latin in 1572, discusses lenses, plane and curved mirrors, and colors. He was the first to advance the notion that the eye refracted the light rather than emitting it, a view commonly held in his time.
