Taufa'ahau was son of Queen Salote Tupou III. As a Crown Prince, he worked as a religious preacher, and later studied law in Australia. His mother Queen Salote appointed him Minister of Education in 1943, Minister of Health in 1944, and Premier in 1949. Taufa'ahau became king upon the death of his mother in 1965.

Back: Ha'amonga stone gateway

Ha'amonga 'a Maui (Burden of Maui) is a stone trilithon located in Tonga. The weight of the visible part of each upright stone is approximately 30-40 tons. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century under the 11th Tu'i Tonga Tu'itatui, most likely as a gateway to his royal compound Heketa.

Tupou V is the eldest son of the late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, and was appointed Crown Prince on 4 May 1966.

The king attended primary school in Switzerland and secondary school at King's College in Auckland and The Leys School in Cambridge, and went on to study at Oxford University and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.
