Back to Asia

Timor, an island north of Australia, was divided into Portuguese colony (East Timor) and Dutch colony (West Timor). West Timor became part of Indonesia in 1950. East Timor was incorporated into Indonesia 1976-1999, but is recognized as an independent state since 2002. East Timor does not have its own currency. U. S. dollar is the official currency. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Timor-Leste.
