Back to Africa

South Africa, located at the southern tip of Africa, was formed by two former Boer republics (Transvaal and Orange Free States) and the British colonies of Cape of Good Hope and Natal in 1910. Achieved the status of a sovereign state within the British empire in 1934. It withdrew from the British Commonwealth in 1961, but readmitted in 1994. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on South Africa.
